Previous
Next

In this exciting tour you will discover the wonderful landscape and typical products of the areas south of Siena, such as the Val d’Orcia, and you will know two towns not far from each other: Montepulciano and Pienza.

Description

Elegant and sophisticated, Montepulciano is situated on the top of a hill from which you can enjoy a breathtaking view of Val d’Orcia. Sumptuous buildings in Renaissance style and medieval architecture create a fascinating and unique urban environment.
The heart of the city is its highest point, Piazza Grande, where stands the Cathedral and the majestic Palazzo Pubblico designed by the famous Florentine architect Michelozzo. Some of the works of this great artist and the enormous Triptych of the Assumption by Taddeo di Bartolo are preserved inside the Cathedral.
Montepulciano is a symbol of high quality wine: in fact, Nobile di Montepulciano is one of the most famous and appreciated wines in Italy and abroad.
You will discover this wonderful town, its history and its traditions, such as the original barrel race, called Bravìo. A race between the ancient districts of the town using barrels, which takes place every year on the last Sunday of August.
The tour continues towards the beautiful small town of Pienza, the result of a dream; the ambition of Enea Silvio Piccolomini, who became Pope Pius II, who wanted to transform his native village, Corsignano, into an utopian city which should have embodied the principles and the philosophy of Classicism and should became a symbol of the Italian Renaissance. A dream that only partially came true and this can still be perceived walking through the picturesque streets.
Pienza is also well known for the local production of Pecorino cheese, which is yearly the protagonist of a town expo in September. You will see typical food shops and taste all different kinds of Pecorino cheese, such as cheese with truffles, figs and pepper.
You will discover this dream city, its history, the beautiful Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, its beautiful buildings and its picturesque views.
Along the way, you will have a stop to taste the local wine in one of the many wineries in the territory of the incomparable Val D’Orcia (upon request).
