An experienced local guide will accompany you to discover a jewel of Italian Romanesque-Gothic architecture. The Siena Cathedral, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, houses beautiful works of italian artists, such as Michelangelo, Donatello and Bernini. His floor is considered a marble carpet, decorated in marble inlays by Sienese artists from the 14th century.

Description

In Piazza Duomo stands the imposing Siena Cathedral and right here you will begin the visit. The extraordinary façade is made of white, black-green and red marble and is decorated with statues depicting philosophers, prophets and sibyls that seem to talk to each other. The guide will tell you the story of why the Cathedral was unfortunately left unfinished in the middle of the 14th century, and so giving up the project of the “Nuovo Duomo” (new Cathedral).
The visit continues inside, where you will have the opportunity to admire the inlaid marble mosaic floor, even in the period when the floor will not be completely uncovered. You will explore the interior in detail: the wonderful statues of Michelangelo, including St. Paul that is considered his first self-portrait; the Chapel of St. John the Baptist that houses a statue realized by Donatello; the Chigi Chapel of Bernini, for which he creates two beautiful statues and the charming pulpit of Nicola Pisano. You will also admire the numerous paintings and frescoes of the apse made by Domenico Beccafumi.
The visit inside the beautiful Piccolomini Library is an unique experience. The frescoes by Pinturicchio and Raffaello depict scenes of the life of Enea Silvio Piccolomini, who became Pope Pius II.
During the period when the floor has been uncovered, the guide will also show and explain to you some of the panels under the dome designed by the Sienese artist Domenico Beccafumi.
