Siena clay “desert” at sunset

The “Crete” clay desert of rolling hills area near Siena, is everchanging: during the springtime is a brilliant green sea; during the summertime it turns gold yellow and after the july harvesting it turns the typical clay colour brown-grey. Tiny oak groves, dirt country roads and cypress trees complete the scenary: a fascinating landscape for every season of the year!

“Crete senesi” area starts a few km south of Siena towards Valdorcia and the seaside. The soil is in clay, that 4 million years ago was the bottom of an ancient sea: when it dried, this sand turned slowly into a soft stone modelled in strange shapes, as “biancane”, little hemispherical hills, and “calanchi”, thin ridges and very deep valleys.
Biancane e calanchi are the right place to find little fossil shells, that proove without doubts their sea origin.
Nowadays biancane and calanchi are ufficially preserved because of their high biodiversity and landscape value, after some decades of decrease due to intensive agriculture.
Anyway they are so fragile that they decrease 0.1 inch every rainstorm!

I graduated in Biology and then specialized in Marine Biology, I studied around Italy in important universities and research laboratories. After the Master in Environmental Legislation I returned to my beloved Siena, where my family and my dear friends were waiting for me.
I am from the Shell neighborhood (Contrada del Nicchio), you will discover in our company that the “Contrada life” in Siena is very important since childhood, and it is one of the things that makes this city unique!
Since I was a child I had a passion for teaching, over the years I worked in schools as an educator and so I developed interesting projects in the field of environmental education. My passion for playing with children will never end and in fact I am also a swimming instructor, specialized for people with psychophysical problems.
