Description

Siena is a city with a very long history, important people have passed through here and many noble families have built their palaces right in the historic center.
The medieval palaces and castles were built in precise positions, for example along the Via Francigena, the ancient road of pilgrims. However, not only religious men passed along this road, because it was also an important trade route. It was also relevant to build their palaces or tower houses near the city walls. The guide will show you which are the palaces along the Via Francigena and which were those near the walls of the time and you will find out why the location of the palaces was so significant.
You will retrace the lives of the many Sienese noble families, discovering their fascinating stories. These families from the Middle Ages to the 20th century have occupied prominent roles in socio-economic and cultural development and have contributed to the urban appearance of Siena today.
You will begin your tour near the Cathedral. First you will admire the Palazzo Buonsignori and then the tower house. What was a tower house in the Middle Ages? Who lived in it and what did it mean for a family to live in a building so likely uncomfortable?
Discover characteristic streets and the Via Francigena, where you will find the beautiful historical palaces. With the guide you will cross Siena looking always head up.
At a certain point of the tour, you will arrive in Piazza del Campo to admire its splendid palaces that have changed over the centuries, such as Palazzo Sansedoni and Palazzo Chigi Zondadari.
The walk will continue discovering other important families such as Piccolomini, Ugurgieri, Tolomei, Salimbeni and Malavolti. Finally you will arrive at the Historical Palace: you will have the honor to visit the inside of an 18th-century palace, in the company of its owner who will be glad to accompany you to discover the rooms of his beloved palace. A unique opportunity to admire a building, normally not open to public.
