The Sienese Art in the National Museum of Siena

The Pinacoteca offers numerous works of art; from artists before Duccio di Buoninsegna of the 13th century to artists of the 16th and 17th century such as Domenico Beccafumi, Sodoma, Francesco Vanni, Rutilio Manetti, Bernardino Mei and many others.
An expert local guide will lead you to discover this museum located inside the Palazzo Buonsignori-Brigidi, starting from the Renaissance courtyard, where you can see a Roman figurative sarcophagus and an Etruscan urn.

The Sienese school differs a lot from the Florentine school, in fact while Florence in the 15th century becomes the “spring of the Renaissance”, in Siena the artists remain very linked to the tradition of the Gothic art, for this reason in the 15th century you will find Sienese works that doesn’t seem to be of this period. On this tour you will discover the evolution of Sienese art from the beginning of the 13th century, going through the centuries up to the 1600’s.
The museum’s chronological order starts from the top floor, where there are the first rooms that preserve the works from the origins of Sienese painting from the 13th to the second half of the 15th centuries: artists like Guido da Siena, Duccio di Buoninsegna, Simone Martini, Pietro and Ambrogio Lorenzetti and Sano di Pietro just to name a few.
The visit continues with several sections dedicated to the painting of the 16th century, with works of two main protagonists of the first half of the century: Domenico Beccafumi, of whom you will admire the beautiful preparatory drawings for the marble inlays of the Cathedral’s floor of Siena, a wonderful work depicting scenes from the Old Testament and Giovanni Antonio Bazzi, known as Sodoma.
The tour ends with the art of the late 16th and 17th centuries, focused on altarpieces and paintings of Sienese artists such as Francesco Vanni, Alessandro Casolani, Rutilio Manetti, Astolfo Petrazzi and Bernardino Mei.
